What Happens to Mulch After Stump Grinding ?
Once a customer decides to have stumps ground up, one of the next questions is what happens to the wood chips ?
The great news is that the material left behind isn’t waste. It is actually a natural byproduct that can be used in many ways. At Freeman Stump Grinding, we offer several levels of clean-up options for you to choose from to get your desired end result.
What Is Stump Grinding Mulch ?
When a stump is ground up, the machine turns the stump into a mixture of wood chips, sawdust, and small organic matter. Many people refer to this material as stump grindings or mulch. The amount produced depends on the size of the stump and surface roots.
Option 1: Grind-n-Go:
Many homeowners choose this option to save money. After the stump is ground up, the grindings are left in place and spread out over the area where the stump was located. Over time, the wood chips decompose and return to the soil as organic matter. This is a great option if you are not looking to restore the area quickly. As an added soil enhancement, high nitrogen fertilizer can be added to the grindings to speed up decomposition.
Benefits to this option are:
• No Additional Costs for Disposal
• Helps Retain Soil Moisture During Decomposition
• Adds Organic Matter Back to the Soil
Option 2: Grind and Spread:
In this option, instead of leaving the mulch spread over the stump area, we can move the mulch around on your property to areas around other trees, flower beds, or landscaped areas.
When used as mulch, this can:
• Help Control Weeds
• Retain Moisture
• Protect Plants From Extreme Temperatures
• Improve the Appearance of Landscaped Areas
This is an excellent choice if you already use mulch in your yard.
Option 3: Remove the Grindings
If you plan to restore the yard immediately, you may choose to have us remove and haul the grindings off. With this option, we grind and haul away the grindings leaving the area ready for top soil, grass seed, sod, or landscape projects.
This option is the cleanest option and can have added upgrades all the way to Full Yard Restoration complete with seed or sod.
Can You Plant Grass Over Stump Grindings?
Grass can be planted successfully but it works better when not planted directly into a thick layer of fresh wood chips.
As the chips decompose, they temporarily use the nitrogen from the surrounding soil which can make it more difficult establish grass. The addition of high nitrogen fertilizer can assist.
For Best Results, we recommend:
• Removing excess grindings or spreading in landscape areas
• Adding quality topsoil over the grinding area
• Apply Grass Seed or Sod
• Water regularly until grass is established.
Are Stump Grindings Good for the Soil?
Yes—in the right place.
As they break down, stump grindings add organic matter that can improve soil structure over time. They work especially well as mulch around trees, shrubs, and flower beds.
If you're restoring a lawn, however, topsoil should be placed over the ground area before seeding or sodding. You can also add the soil enhancement of nitrogen fertilizer.
